New Student Attendance View Available in NYCSA and Student Profile: Beginning May 17, families will have the option to view their student’s current year attendance information in calendar and/or table views in their NYC Schools Account (NYCSA). The new calendar view is color-coded to indicate the date(s) that a student was marked late or absent. The table view has been updated to include the specific date(s) that a student was marked late. As a reminder, students’ year-to-date attendance is cumulative, and is not differentiated by each school a student attended in the same academic year.
Teachers with access to Student Profile will also be able to view students’ attendance in calendar and/or table views, as described above. Access to Student Profile is automatically provisioned to school administrators with designated roles in Galaxy as well as teachers, who will only be able to see information for students enrolled in their assigned course-section(s) in STARS Classroom.
Supplementary Certification Opportunity for Current Elementary Physical Education (PE) Teachers Who Are Not Certified in PE: The DOE in collaboration with Brooklyn College is offering in-service, K–5 teachers, who are not certified in PE, an opportunity to apply for a 12-credit program leading to the Supplementary Certificate in Physical Education (PE). To be eligible, teachers must currently be teaching PE in grades K–5. The DOE will cover tuition and fees for the 12-credit program. Coursework begins in late June, and concludes in spring 2019; participants must attend a mandatory orientation at Brooklyn College in early June prior to the start of the program. For more information about this opportunity, see this flyer; Note that upon obtaining the supplementary certificate, which is valid for five years, participants are responsible for covering the cost of the remaining credits towards the Initial Certificate in Physical Education.
Guidance on Supporting Students Observing Ramadan: The month of Ramadan begins on May 15 and ends on June 15 with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, which is a DOE school holiday. During this time, some Muslim students may choose to observe Ramadan by fasting from sunrise to sunset, and will go through the school day without eating or drinking. It is important to provide an environment for Ramadan-observing students in which they feel supported during this period. Chancellor’s Regulation A-630 addresses obligations with respect to accommodation of religious observances. Training for Paraprofessionals on Supporting Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): The DOE, in partnership with the Regional Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (RCASD), is offering training for paraprofessionals who work with students with autism, on June 7 (Anniversary Day, a non-attendance day for students). The training will focus on ways to increase and support social skills for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), strategies for promoting student independence, and tips on creating visual supports for students in the classroom and at home. Attendees will receive two, Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE)-eligible hours upon completion of the training. The training will be held at two locations from 8:30–11:00 a.m., and 11:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m. on June 7:
§ At NYU Langone Child Study Center (One Park Avenue in Manhattan); and
§ At New Dorp High School (465 New Dorp Lane on Staten Island).
The content is the same for both sessions, so you should only register your paraprofessionals for one session. Space is limited, so please register only 2–3 paraprofessionals from your school. For questions, email ASDPrograms@schools.nyc.gov.
Opportunity to Apply for the Teacher Leadership Program (TLP): Teacher Leadership Program (TLP) offers year-long leadership development opportunities to help build the capacity of teacher leaders to facilitate school-based professional learning communities. The TLP offers per-session for participants to build capacity among their peers and improve teaching and learning in their schools. You can apply by June 1. Teacher leaders must have at least three years of experience as full-time teachers and must currently serve in school-based roles whose responsibilities include facilitation of teacher teams.
