About Our Arts Programs

Arts Program

A well-rounded arts education enriches the cultural lives of our students and empowers them to be innovative and creative thinkers. P.S. 201 Q offers complete music and dance programs led by two in-house educators as well as additional enrichment programs in drama, visual art, dance and music.  Classroom teachers and arts specialists collaborate to bring multi-cultural arts learning to the students via the Roots, Routes, and Rhythms program.

Dance Program

Through the dance program students at P.S. 201 Q develop technical movement skills, gain aesthetic experiences with the art form in its world context, and discover how to choreograph and design their own dances. Aligned with our STEAM program’s mission, students develop life-long skills as they collaborate with each other, communicate ideas, connect to the world, and think critically about their creations. Through the lens of creative dance, the curriculum focuses on modern, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and social folk dances of the world. Performing arts field trips to local theaters and opportunities to perform for our school community throughout the year enrich the program.

Roots, Routes, and Rhythms

Roots, Routes, and Rhythms is a grant received through City Lore.  It identifies significant places in the community and examines urban traditions and cultural equity through the arts.  Select teachers and arts specialists in our school are making a 3 year commitment to design programs that will resonate with their classroom communities and curriculums.  Teaching artists and guests from the community are available to come in and add deep enrichment to learning throughout the school year.

Stars Dance Company

Stars After School Dance Company is an after school program for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders designed to expose students to a professional artistic dance company model.  After auditioning, the students collaborate to create original dances and perform them at a variety of school community events. Notable events include the Winter Extravaganza, Lunar New Year Celebration, African-American History Month, and the Spring into the Arts Concert.  Aligned with our STEAM theme, students ask, imagine, plan, create, and improve their dances, until they are ready to share and shine on stage.

Shakespeare Players Enrichment

Shakespeare Players Enrichment is a program for 4th and 5th graders who dive into the literary world of William Shakespeare through drama, music, dance, and design. Inspired by The Royal Shakespeare Company's pedagogy, the students access concepts and themes through project based learning and embodying the text. The program culminates with a staged performance of a Shakespeare play, with every element produced by the students.
